Works great and has a large capacity. I love it!
(All metal inside is what I always wanted for health reasons, so it is exactly what I wanted)
hamilton-beach Hamilton Beach 40999 10-Cup Electric Stainless-Steel Teakettle Okay for Tea Drinker

Review Date: November 11, 2007
Reviewer: polish$princess, Midwest Rural Sticks
I looked at many electric tea kettles before purchasing this one. My intention was to find a fast way to brew tea without using my gas stove. I also wanted to avoid plastic, and this was attractive because the pot is stainless and the heat element is under the stainless and doesn't come in direct contact with the water. Alas the water level is plastic, too bad, could easily do without that level if there were level lines inside the pot.

Another reason I selected this was the possibility of making tea IN the pot, alas this is not the case. But the description of the mesh filter is a little misleading. The kettle cannot be used with loose tea. The point of the filter is to prevent any calcium deposits from pouring out with the water, but this isn't really necessary if you clean the pot as recommended. The filter is a little plastic one that slides into a slot inside where the spout hole is. The filter is removable though, and isn't needed to heat water.

On the plus side, the water heats fast. The directions say to boil water and throw out the first 2-3 kettles full plus rinse 2-3 more times. I did this and had to throw out the next kettle full because there was a strong unpleasant taste. After 4 boils though, the taste is gone.

When full, the kettle is heavy. If your hands are not strong, a shorter and wider pot rather than this tall one might be easier to lift and pour.

Heat element shuts off quickly, and the pot heats fast. Takes some getting used to, if you are accustomed to waiting awhile for your water to boil, you'll have to move more quickly because the water is boiled and done and the pot is off in no time.

Looks nice on the counter and the heat element is a round glass stand.

Great, will use and enjoy, but still am looking for the perfect tea kettle, preferably not made in China.

hamilton-beach Hamilton Beach 40999 10-Cup Electric Stainless-Steel Teakettle looks good BUT ........

Review Date: February 4, 2009
Reviewer: P. Pearce,
Looks good BUT the lid is very difficult to get on and off, there is no light to indicate the kettle is on, and it is difficult to tell when the automatic switch has switched the kettle off. If it had a light then the light could switch off, or it could make a loud 'click' sound as the switch turned off.

Reviewer: R. M. Straight, Ohio in body, Taiwan in heart
I purchased this to put on my desk at work so I didn't have to keep heating up water in a communal microwave in order to make tea. It's a tad slow to boil and the cord is a little short, but aside from that it's very nice. The flavor of the water is great (even cold), and, unless you have a hard time carrying a gallon of milk, it's not too heavy even when full. It does get very hot, being metal and not insulated, but if you keep it out of the way, it's not a problem. Remember that the spout allow copious amounts of steam into the air, so you don't want to point it at anything that can be easily damaged by that.

Overall, great for adults, but should be kept out of children's reach. A good buy.

Kettle surface stays clean and high volume is a bonus. Protected element is essential for the water we have to prevent scaling. Does not have a light to indicate when on so you can't be across the room to see when it is done. Otherwise good buy.

HAVE BEEN USING THIS FOR A MONTH NOW AND I LOVE IT! IT WAS BOUGHT AS A REPLACEMENT FOR A CUSINART CORDLESS THAN FINALLY BLEW UP AFTER 7 YEARS FAITHFUL SERVICE. SO FAR SO GOOD. IT IS AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT FOR THE PRICE PAID. EASY TO USE, POURS WELL AND LOOKS MODERN AND STYLISH ON THE COUNTER TOP. IT WILL BOIL A MINIMUM OF .5 A LTR IF MAKING SMALL POT OF ASIAN TEA OR UP TO 1.7 LTRS. I CAN CERTAINLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. I HOPE THAT IT PROVES TO BE DURABLE ..... I WOULD BE DISAPPOINTED TO BE WITHOUT IT NOW.

Reviewer: sildhe mac,
This electric tea kettle is very classy looking and works very well. Two things would make it better:-1.a light to tell it is on. 2. the lid is extremely tight and the handle difficult to grasp. We loosened the lid and it helps a lot.
Did a man design this??

This pot heats water quickly and is easy to pour; you don't have to fuss with trying to align it on the base.
Downside: lid is a little awkward to remove and replace (would have been better to hinge it) and the exterior of the pot and lid become quite hot to the touch.
For the price, and compared to others I've had in the same price range, a pretty good kettle.

I love my hot pot...I boil water every morning to use in my French Press. It brings water to a boil much faster that the stovetop teapot BUT over time Hamilton Beach Teakettle leaks and gets worse each day. At first it was just a little leak at the bottom seal. Then the plastic gage window started to leak. Now, both leaks spread water all over my counter top if there is any water left between uses. Not a good design. I am ordering a new one but trying a different brand.

Review Date: June 11, 2009
Reviewer: J. Holden,
A very poorly designed kettle - it started to leak in just one year. The windows on the side began to separate from the body. The problem became so acute that water leaked down the side toward the base. On one occasion, I went to pick it up and was given an electric shock. I strongly advise against purchasing this very poor product.

This is the first review I have given on this site mainly because I have been pleased with my purchases thus far. I have been buying from Amazon for years.
I bought this kettle because I liked the design and the reviews, for the most part were positive overall.
This kettle is noisy but that's the least of it's problems - the handle came away from the body the first day! It is attached at the top so when I pick it up I have to hold bottom under the spout and be careful not to burn myself.
My fault because I didn't send it back or complain at the time. (i had already recycled the box) I very rarely return items unless they are expensive.
My other complaint is that it is slower than other electric kettles I have owned. Be warned! Shoddy workmanship...

Reviewer: Robyn Neeley,
Use extreme caution when ordering from Today's Concept....wish I checked the non-Amazon reviews. This item is still showing in stock but I have been told that they don't have it nor will they. Ordered close to a month ago and was shipped the wrong item. Returned it and was promised the correct item....that never showed up. Called again and was promised that it would be over-nighted to me...another empty promise. Nearly a month later and repeated phone calls one CSR actually said that they would resubmit the order but chances are I would get the wrong product again. When I questioned him about that insane statement I was told that the product was not in stock and they ship out substitutes (without permission). Absolutely ridiculous! Needless to say I asked for a refund which I have no faith in actually going through. Next step - call my bank and reverse the charge. Stay clear!

Reviewer: M. Chase, Blue Lake, CA
This tea kettle was a huge disappointment for me. First of all, it leaked. Secondly, my intention in getting a tea pot such as this was to have a constant supply of hot water in my office for tea. Once you push the lever down to heat the water, it makes a huge loud noise. It does heat the water rather quickly, but self-shuts off. When you're ready to pour water for a 2nd cup of tea, the water has cooled off and you have to endure the loud noise again and wait. Didn't meet my needs in this area. Then to top it all off, after 2 months the kettle broke and doesn't heat water at all!! Bad choice, save your money and time.

Product Description

Housed in premium-quality brushed stainless steel, this electric kettle quickly boils up to 1-4/5 quarts of water for coffee, tea, instant soups, and more. Its immersed 1500-watt heating element provides a rapid and quiet heating process, while a "ready" bell indicates when the water has begun to boil. There's no need to worry about leaving it on, the kettle automatically shuts off when the water boils, and its boil-dry protection keeps the unit from boiling when there's no water left. With the press of a button, the cushion-controlled lid opens for convenient filling at the tap, and a removable "scale filter" reduces the amount of calcium in water to ensure great taste. Other highlights include an easy "on/off" switch, an LED-illuminated water gauge, a multi-directional base with cord storage, and an ergonomic soft-grip handle. To clean, simply wipe down with a damp cloth. The kettle measures 7-1/2 by 9-8/9 by 11-1/9 inches. + Accessory kit;-Bodum Assam Double Wall Espresso/Shot 3 Oz. Glass Set Of 2.

breville Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle Good appliance, finally made of stainless steel

Review Date: March 8, 2006
Reviewer: Leo, PA, not far from Phila
While there is typically little difference between any two electric kettles, this one is at least at the top of the spectrum.

1. Being an extremely convenient home appliance "discovered" by the Europeans decades ago, and later in the USA, the electric kettle always left one concern: compared to its mundane predecessor it was typically made of plastic inside and out. Which could potentially mean various unhealthy substances emanating into the water from the plastic sides, especially at high boiling temperatures. This one is made of stainless steel and doesn't cause any such concerns.
2. The kettle can be rotated on its cordless base, which makes it easier to put it back on the base than some other models.
3. It has a transparent wall segment to measure water level. While this "window" is not located optimally (somewhat shadowed by the handle) and hasn't got a bright floating level marker, this design is sturdier than some others, and is less prone to leaks.
4. Blue back-light that goes on and lights this "window" when the kettle is switched on, is a nice touch. It both attracts attention and simplifies reading the water level.
5. It's easy to open the lid, and the opening is wide to add water with no problems or dripping. (In some models the handle partly covers the lid, making it hard to open and/or add water.)
6. Like in most up-to-date models, the heating spiral is NOT located inside the boiling case, but rather underneath it, which makes the design more relaible, and it is also much easier to wash the kettle inside if need be.
7. Time to boil is reasonable and not worse than average.
breville Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle Best high-end electric kettle for price.

Review Date: November 30, 2006
Reviewer: apfb, Pasadena, CA
We've had ours for one month after the cheapo plastic one died. I investigated multiple other high-end electric kettles, including Cuisinart, Chef' Choice, Krups, Braun by reading reviews on-line and comparing them @ the local bricks & mortar stores. The Breville is clearly the best designed one for the money.

Pros:
- clean, beautiful design which is also easier to clean.
- hefty, substantial base unit with place to wrap around the cord
- boils quickly in 4 min. for full 1.5 L
- more substantial kettle than more expensive models by Chef's Choice or Cuisinart. The Chef's Tools electric kettle @ the same price point looked flimsier. In fact, the floor model Chef's Choice kettle was no longer closing or opening its lid properly-- always a bad sign when a floor model falls apart.
- modest yet easily audible "ping" sound when the water has come to a boil, and the kettle shuts off automatically.
- the outlet is easy to pull due to the hollow center design

Cons:
- heavy kettle.
- occasionally, there's a metallic taste in reboiled water if the water was left inside the kettle for several hours. However, the water tastes fine if you boil a pot from freshly filled water.

Overall, clearly the pros outweigh the cons. We're heavy users of the electric kettle, especially in the winter, boiling water for teas, soups at least 4-5x per day. We'll report back again in a yr after the warranty expires.

UPDATE > 1 yr after post (4/6/08): The Breville Ikon is still going strong. The water seems to be taking a slightly longer time to boil. We still use it 3-4 times per day, and it works well.
breville Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle Excellent product; a "hit" at the office

Review Date: November 29, 2006
Reviewer: A Reviewer, Oakton, VA United States
Truly a top notch product. I was tired of lukewarm water "nuked" in the microwave for tea or hot chocolate at the office so, after consulting other customer reviews for products under the "electric kettle" search, I took the plunge. A bit expensive, but worth it.

Pros:
1. Stainless inside and out. No plastic taste or chemical worries.
2. Very comfortable handle, nice curve to it, and totally insulated.
3. Cord minder on the base bottom; allows you to tailor the cord length to your needs. Cord very sturdy.
4. Separate base contains the cord. The kettle itself reminds me, from the standpoint of heft and size, of an "old fashioned" stove top percolator
5. The removable kettle itself; also, you can turn the kettle around to any point on the base; it doesn't have a notch or fixed position
6. Construction appears to be quite solid. Push a button and the top opens up automatically (not just a cheap spring, either). Glass center insert on top so you can see in; top is also domed to direct condensation back into the pot; haven't had any problem with water dripping onto the counter (or hand!) when opened.
7. Quick; heating just one mugful of water to boiling is easily faster than the microwave (same time in microwave will leave you with hot, but not boiling water).
8. Easy to clean; the opening is wide enough to get your hand in, and the top opens up to 90 degrees. There is a rod that runs up the inside, part of the temperature sensing system, but there's room enough to get a soft cloth behind it, you'd just need to avoid too much force. Cleaning, however, is not a big deal overall if you use it for its purpose - heating WATER only (don't heat your soup in this; it's not made for it).
9. Looking at other reviews, it seems that some people like to fill the kettle via spout rather than main opening - spout is nicely sized to easily allow this, if you want.
10. The water gauge is big, well marked and very nicely lighted, thus easy to read.
11. Automatic turn-off at boiling temp, and also has a function to avoid boiling dry (The boil turn-off feature kicks in about 30 seconds after you can see the water boiling; I haven't personally tried to boil it dry, so can't comment on that feature). There's a nice, but soft, single "ding" that it makes when it turns off. You might not hear it from another room, but it shouldn't damage itself by boiling dry, so even if you miss the ding, it's not a big deal.
12. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to mine its lines are clean, simple and elegant. Should fit with just about any decor. Fingerprints on the outside stainless haven't been a big issue; wipes clean with damp cloth.

Comments (not "Cons"):
1. Regarding another reviewer's comments about weight, it does have some "heft," but on the other hand, it has a good capacity! To heat one or two cups, it's handy enough. Stainless steel will be heavier than plastic, so if weight is an issue for you, you may wish to consider this point.
2. I wish the otherwise nice switch wasn't directly at the bottom end of the handle, but this really isn't a big deal.
3. I've seen reviews indicating that stainless steel pots get hot on the outside. This one probably does, too (if you put your hand near it after boiling, you can sense the heat). Well, the handle is perfectly insulated, and this is NOT an insulated device. I wouldn't put my hand on the outside of any "regular" metal pot or pan (steel or aluminum, like those found in any kitchen for daily cooking)that had a boiling liquid in it, so I wouldn't do that with this type of device, either!
4. Reviewers of other kettles have suggested that the device may leak if water is left overnight. Have not had that problem with this, but then again, we empty it at the end of each day.
5. Have not had any problems with rust, as has been noted with competing products, but see comments in #4, above.

Before purchasing, I looked at the competition in stores, and a friend has "another leading brand" competetor; this seemed superior to the others in virtually every way (particularly build quality, the others I'd seen seemed rather "cheap" despite their price). Definitely recommend; this is a winner in our office; several people have already bought their own!
breville Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle finally- a good looking kettle that works well!

Review Date: August 29, 2006
Reviewer: K. Robertson, San Francisco, CA
This kettle looks, feels, acts and is expensive. So if you like "high-end" stuff, this is the kettle for you. It has a great weight to it and everything feels well made (this coming from someone who hopes to be designing products for the rest of her life). It's quiet and boils water quickly. The "ding" when it's done is a little quiet so I often forget I've been boiling water, but I'm sure that if it were louder, I'd complain as such. I was worried about regretting spending $70 on a kettle, but I'm glad I did. I have no regrets, and it's worth $70 to pay for a great kettle that I use every day!
breville Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle Excellent kettle, Excellent company

Review Date: July 3, 2006
Reviewer: RM, Newport Beach, California
I received this tea kettle as a replacement for a Nova teakettle (the former model) that I purchased in October 2005.

Part of the quality of a product is how the company stands behind it, and Breville is excellent in this area. My former kettle developed a short in the on/off switch. I notified the company by email, and I received an email response in 3 hours asking some questions and for more detail. In 3 more hours, I received an email with a fed-x label. They indicated they wanted to see the product, and they would either repair or replace it. Within a week, I had this new model as a replacement, since they no longer make the Nova.

I then received a follow up phone call from Breville to make sure I got and liked the new product, which I do. The warranty period for the new product starts again, so it has a full one year warranty. I also asked about the switch, since I was concerned that this could be a problem, and they assured me that this is a problem they just don't have with the applicances. The customer service rep indicated that in 10 years, he had seen about 6 of the type of problem I had. It seems that a customer service rep that has worked for a company for 10 years also says something about the company.

The new kettle heats quickly and to a full boil. It also has the sharp looks where you can use for entertaining. I am happy with the product, and very happy with the company's service.

I love this kettle! Seems the other reviewers have covered the reasons why. I will say that this kettle was a replacement for an older model whose lid broke. I contacted Breville about the broken lid, and had a replacement within 10 days. Now, that is great service!

For those who love form as well as function, this is an elegant, stylish appliance. The photo does not do the product justice. It's really beautiful and very well designed. The kettle is sturdy and works well while adding to my kitchen decor. I won't go into the perfomance specifics which are excellent, because the other reviewers convinced me to purchase this product and I am 100% satisfied.

I have struggled with bad kettles for years. Finally I have found a kettle I am happy with in every way. This kettle is elegant, with quality construction and materials and pleasing light blue incidental functions. It boils fast enough, has a very pleasant bell that signals when the water is done. I have not noticed that it invites burns. The handle is comfortable. The bottom is recessed so that the connection between the base and the kettle will not rust out. There is a a new rubber taste to the water initially, but it goes away very quickly. The top, which closes slowly and elegantly, is rimmed with a very soft real rubber gasket that takes a few boils to become tasteless. The kettle has an upper window that adds interest to the process of using it.

BREVILLE USES a very heavy RECYCLED PAPER PRODUCT FOR PACKAGING. The kettle was cushioned with a heavy molded cardboard..no big plastic landfill. I was able to reuse and recycle everything but the kettle itself. IT FELT GREAT!

I would just LOVE to see more reviews that rated manufacturers partially based on their standards for packaging their appliances. It tipped me off to the fact that I was dealing with a company who cared about the world they were sending this kettle into. I want to see more people and companies aware of this opportunity to make a difference.

Have used this kettle daily for two weeks. I think it's great. It is meant to boil water easily, and it does this perfectly: simple to fill, quick to boil, easy to pour, easy to clean, shuts off automatically. It is a sturdy piece of equipment and has a great look and feel. I compared it to all similar items at amazon, and I'm glad that I bought this one.

It can be filled with one hand; the lid opens automatically. The spout is big, but not so big that too much heat gets lost during boil. It is easy to tell when the unit is on - the whole water gauge lights up brightly. There is hardly any plastic that comes into contact with boiling water, none at all if you fill to less than full capacity.

Here are the minor drawbacks (I don't consider any of these truly significant). The "ding" that signals a completed cycle is nice but almost inaudible. I don't find that this matters though, because you can easily tell if the unit is on or off just by looking, and you know when a pot of water is about to boil when the loud rumbling goes away. It shuts off automatically anyway, so a bell is not all that necessary. The pot is not insulated, so yes, the metal does get very hot. Only a problem if you have kids - no more dangerous than many other items in the kitchen.

As far as the bad smell/taste goes, I noticed it with the first 3 or 4 boils, then it went completely away. Not a reason to avoid this item - just dump your first few pots. Sometimes I wonder if other reviewers have used their purchases more than once before reviewing.

Finally, a decent electric kettle available in the US. It's more beautiful than the pictures show. Solid, nice grippy handle, a big lid with a smooth release, blue light behind the water level indicator and the piece de la resistance -- a tiny, musical ping when finished. Fast boiling, easy to see in and clean. I love this thing. No, I adore it. Only negative is that it's a shade big.

My husband and I are very happy with our new Breville electric kettle. We purchased the Breville to replace a Delongi stay-cool kettle that only lasted two years. So far, we like the Breville much better. The design makes it very easy to add water. It heats the water to boiling quickly and I haven't noticed any unusual taste. We would highly recommend the product. Very well made.

This is an excellent kettle, more than ample for what I need (in fact, I think I bought a larger one than necessary). Boils water superfast, easy to handle and view quantity of water with the lighted blue inidicator, and the ding when it's finished is a nice touch (most of my friends' electric kettles just shut off, but don't tell you they're ready). The dripless spout really is dripless, which I consider probably the best feature of all -- those of you familiar with a lot of other kettles know the experience if getting boiling water all over the place when you're trying to pour.

Honestly, some the complaints are very odd. If you're stupid enough to put your hands on a hot metal kettle, then you probably shouldn't have one in the first place. The handle is more than adequately placed away from the stainless steel exterior to prevent burned fingers. The push button cover release also shouldn't cause anyone to have to touch the exterior. And I noticed no bad taste at all, even though I'm pretty picky about water quality.

If you're thinking about an electric kettle (and you should be, since they're more energy efficient and faster), this is a great one to get.

This is a quality product. I also got a chance to check out the citrus press and was equally impressed. We previously had a Phillips kettle and the idea of plastic didn't sit well with us especially when fixing formula for a baby. This kettle is awesome! Water stays hot way longer than in the Phillips but the kettle is also very hot to the touch. Took just once to get used to that vs the Phillips. A kettle off of a stove is also hot and you don't go grabbing that by anything but the handle so no big deal. This kettle performs well and looks very cool too. It has a lit up water gauge which is easy to read even when steamed up because water is water and steam is steam. The only thing I might change is the placement of the gauge and switch to more in the middle of the kettle instead of hidden behind the handle but the design allows all of the connections to be limited to that area and probably decreases the chances of leakage by limiting the number of holes. Also not a huge deal. Highly recommend this product.

I recently purchased two of these for my office. They work as advertised. Water is heated quickly. Lid opens all the way for easy filling. No odor issues as I have experienced with a less expensive brand tea kettle. Well thought out design and pretty good looking on the break room counters. I have another brand at home that will be replaced with one of these when it bites the dust.

I'd been looking for an electric kettle for a while and finally decided on the Breville Ikon. I liked the stainless steel, simple design, and stylish looks of this particular kettle. When I actually received the kettle, I was surprised by the actual heft of the kettle and the handle-it felt good in my hand. As mentioned in other reviews, there is a taste of plastic in the water (from the lid?), but with regular use over the weekend, that seems to have disappeared. The blue backlight is also very handy, but the chime that signals the water is done really can't be heard over the boiling and the switch turning itself off. Overall, I think this kettle was worth the money as I use it several times a day.

It is not often that I write product reviews, but I have been so please with this kettle which we have owned for about a month or two. I use it every morning to make french press coffee. Like some of the previous reviewers, I too upgraded from a cheap plastic water boiler and I couldn't be happier. The best things about this product:

1. It works great. No problems so far with functionality.
2. It looks perfect in a kitchen with stainless steel, just like it belongs there.
3. Exceptional design. I love that its cordless (my old one was not). Good rubber handle. When pouring a lot of boiling water, the steam will never come burn your hand. The auto-shut off is really nice too.

Just a well made product.

We've had this kettle for almost 2 years now and could not be happier. It is a beautiful, very sturdy appliance, though like all stainless steel, the outside needs to be maintained properly. I can think of no faults with its design or function. We bought this to replace our old stove-top kettle and are glad we did. It is incredibly fast, so fast we even use it to boil water to cook large pots of pasta (obviously, we pour the water into a pot, it's a kettle, not a Hotpot).

The best features are probably the cordless design and the swivel base. It will work in any position on top of the base and is very convenient to move around, fill up, and pour out without the cord dragging from the kettle itself.

The water level indicator is behind the large handle but I've never had a problem reading it. I really don't use it that much except to make sure it's not overfilled when boiling large quantities of water. The "cushion-controlled" lid also still works perfectly and always opens with a push of the button and seals tight when pressed back down.

I've never tested the boil-dry protection, and I don't ever want to, but the auto-off function always works, with the little 'ding' of the bell to tell you it is done.

Now if only Breville made an auto-drip coffe machine to replace my now leaking 8 year old Krups ProAroma...

After searching high and low for a kettle that had little or no plastic in it, exhausted, I finally chose this one. Honestly, I wasn't sure what I was going to find but there were so many good reviews I thought I should just take my chances. So far, it was a great choice.
As far as the plastic goes, there is very little. Just the two small holes that allow the water to go into the level indicator window on the handle side. This does not seem too bad to me. The lid has a plastic window too but just gets condensation so no problem. I usually remove the filter so I don't have to worry about that plastic either.
Love the blue light which illuminates the switch and the level indicator, actually does help to see easily where the water level is any time of day without having to squint close at it. Also, the lid is huge so cleaning or wiping the inside is really a breeze...other kettles had tiny openings that only a brush could fit inside...didn't want that! The ding when it is done boiling is quiet enough to not be obnoxious but load enough that if you are in the room or its fairly quiet and you're in a different room you can still hear it. The plug was a cool surprise! It has a ring design so when you pull it, its very secure to pull on, nice touch, love that too!
So far so good but I haven't used it too much so I will update this after it gets more use. Overall though, I would highly recommend this kettle as it seems to be very good quality and is very functional and well thought out in the details.

breville Breville BKE820XL Variable Temperature Kettle New tea snob in the making thanks to this excellent kettle

Review Date: November 24, 2008
Reviewer: Hogun, Marietta, GA
I am relatively new to the tea scene (my wife and I started drinking Teavana teas about a year ago) and as such I have been searching for a really good kettle. I wanted an electric kettle because of their ease of use as well as the extra features some of the nicer kettles offer. After an exhaustive search I decided upon the Breville SK500XL Ikon Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle based in no small part to the excellent reviews it has received on Amazon and other sites.

I went to a few stores to examine it in person and compare it to about ten other electric kettles that the different stores carried but nothing seemed to come close to the design and quality of the Breville. So after finally making my decision, it was simply a matter of time before I made my purchase. I am very glad I waited as within 2 weeks this new Breville kettle was released. While still substantially costlier than the SK500XL, the BKE820XL has a number of features and design improvements that made the extra cost more than worth it. These include:

- Multiple temperature settings (different teas require different temperature water for an optimally brew) with 20 minute hold
- Improved water level indicators now on both sides (the single water level indicator on the SK500XL is behind the handle which makes it hard to read)

I've only had my BKE820XL a few days (I purchased it from a local store) so I cannot speak to its long term reliability yet, if it is anything like the SK500XL, I don't expect to have any problems.

Oh yeah, and the tea I've made in the last few days is easily the best I've ever brewed! Yay!

UPDATE 1/2/2009: I've had the BKE820XL for over a month now and I still love it! The only thing I've found that I would critique is:

- After you are done boiling water for the day, you need to either dry out the lid by hand or leave the lid open for a few hours to let the water evaporate (from the lid where it collects). I am concerned that not doing this might lead to issues down the road.

Even with that, I am still overjoyed with my purchase (which I use at least 5 times a week) and highly recommend it to anyone in search of a quality electric kettle.

UPDATE 3/12/2009 - Nothing much to report except that my wife and I are continuing to use our kettle mutliple times a week and are extremely happy with it. It has a permanent place on our counter! :)

This is an incredibly elegant and precise, yet easy to use kettle. Even the sound to let you know when it's done is discreet and pleasant. Our household has a variety of schedules, and drinks a variety of teas as well as french press coffee. It's wonderful. Finally, jasmine green tea comes out at home as it should!

The manual holds only critical information, so it's brief - but read it well. I started to be dissatisfied about how the hold temp function works until re-reading the paragraph later.

I've only two minor criticisms. I wish that the minimum water that could be heated was 250 ml not 500 ml, but I get around it with an incredible insulated mug/carafe. More annoying is the cord length; if it was just a few inches longer to 2' it would be great. It's been difficult to find a place on the counter near an outlet that wouldn't steam the cupboards above or get knocked over. (And there's no room to stuff 3-6 feet of the correct type of 3-pronged appliance extension cord.)

So - very minor gripes. Even if it broke tomorrow, I'd order another immediately.

I love tea in variety, but have hated to monitor temperature for different kinds I brew. And sometimes, I forget I'm boiling water (I've melted a few traditional kettles to the electric burner). How lovely to have a kettle that I can just set for a particular type of tea, and just let it do the work. And with an automatic shutoff feature, I won't be melting any more kettles again. I debated on getting one that didn't have a variable temperature feature (just to make the expense more affordable), but decided to spring for this model. Such a worthy investment!

As for defects, I haven't personally experienced any. I use my kettle, on average, about four times a day. I boil water for tea, for oatmeal, for soaking dishes, for shaving, etc. In two months, I've had no problems.

If you're debating between this kettle and a cheaper model, I give you my recommendation for this kettle without reservation.

Those who enjoy all types of tea (and not just the red and black "orange pekoes" normally popular outside Asia) quickly learn that different types of tea require different brewing temperatures. In the old days, there was little choice but to bring water to a full boil and then let it cool (and this was a very good practice for safety reasons in the days when water quality was suspect), but boiling water inevitably changes its taste, generally for the worse, and of course the more delicate the flavour the worse the effect. One Chinese tea ceremony includes careful instructions for boiling water in just the right way, up to the point of "Fish Eyes" but not to the point of "Old Man water", to control for such damage to the taste. In more distracting circumstances than found in formal ceremonies, enthusiasts such as myself have been known to employ Instant Read cooking thermometers in the place of such demanding and intuitive practices.... This kettle is made for those who for whatever reason want to bring high tech (or at least 'mid tech') to the problem. And what's more, this kettle allows one to reach the precise ideal temperature range without actually first boiling the water- testing with my Instant Read confirms this- I love it! And this answers a question I always had about whether skipping the boiling point would yield better taste- I've happily proven to myself thus far that it does in the case of Japanese Sencha and High Mountain Taiwanese oolongs, both personal favorite varieties. This kettle will as advertised also hold the desired temperature for about 20 minutes- very good for some Asian tea practices but water held too long is very similar to over-boiled water, so be careful. Asians, meaning the Japanese and the people who clone their products, have high tech systems, similar in appearance to rice cookers, that do a similar task for tea water but perhaps because they are more enclosed seem to me to be harder on the taste from the start, and because they will hold the temperatures for hours and hours, end up by affecting the taste of the water in a drastic way.
Electric tea kettles are much more common in the English speaking, tea drinking countries outside the USA, and that may be why the price for this one as seen on Amazon is over fourty percent higher than in my native Canada [not the normal state of affairs, believe me]. But, if you want a speciallized, variable temperature tea kettle, there is nothing on the market to compare with this one. The Aussies already ruled in the tea kettle world, through Breville- now they must be declared Emperor! Oy oy oy!

I was a little hesitant to spend so much on hot water, but my wife was always going through such a routine to get just the right temp for her green tea and the fact that our old hotpot was so ugly we decided to purchase the Breville. It absolutely does not disappoint. It will heat water to 5 different temps based on what you are using it for - anywhere from green tea to press coffee to boiling. It will also hold the temp for you. This is an elegant, beautiful, well thought out machine. Definitely worth the money.

I grew up in the UK where electric kettles are a dime a dozen, unlike here in the US. Compared to many kettles, this is incredibly expensive and almost doesn't seem worth the price, but it is.

The individual settings for each kind of tea (white, green, black, oolong) and a button for french press coffee make early morning drinks a snap. There is a hold function that will keep your water warm at a constant temperature for 20 minutes, which is perfect for those days you're rushing out the door. There is a mini water filter in the spout which cleans your water well if you don't use filtered (which you should since the calcium build up from tap water isn't good for the kettle). The button mechanism for the lid is super smooth to the point of feeling very expensive. Also, unlike many kettles, there is a pleasant beep when the boiling cycle is complete. On all of our old kettles, I had to listen for the click to tell me the water was done, and it would end up cooling too quickly or scalding my tea leaves. This kettle really has it all.

I do recommend dumping the extra water out in the evening and letting it dry with the top open. The lid has a tendency to condense if its not properly dried out. I haven't seen a problem from this, but I am worried the kettle might start to smell. Also, it outputs a lot of steam (obviously). Don't place it under any cabinets while you boil water or you'll end up with mold.

I absolutely love this kettle, and I'm so glad I bought it at Amazon. The price is much cheaper than you'll find elsewhere, and the free shipping is awesome. Definitely consider this Breville!

I bought this Breville BKD820XL Variable Temperature tea kettle to replace the Breville model that looks like it, but without the variable temp feature. I drink both coffee and tea and was amazed the difference it makes when you use the suggested temperatures for various teas. You'll taste a completely different, and better, flavor profile on green and white teas. As for coffee, I use a French press and the lower temp setting also makes a positive impact on flavor.

The unit is very handsome and easy to clean. I learned from my last stainless steel Breville, that you need to clean any spots off before heating it up or it will create a light stain.

So is this worth the extra money for the variable temp function? It really depends on your personal needs. If you need a kettle to get water to 212 degrees, then I would look at a lower priced kettle. If you enjoy a variety of teas, then I found it's worth the extra cash.

In summary, this is a great product that is easy to use, looks great on the counter, heats water fast and has the variable temp function.

I looked long and hard for a decent kettle as my husband and I drink 3 to 4 cups of tea a day. Here were my requirements:

1) No plastic because of the leaching of chemicals. This kettle has a little plastic but is the best I could find. The glass kettle that is highly rated has a big silicon like seal which people said made the water taste funny.

2) A decent area to fill the kettle. You can fill it either by opening the lid which has a nice mechanism that slowly raises the lid when you push the button. Some kettles have small spouts which require you to aim.

3) A water level indicator. This has a water level indicator on two sides for use by right or left handed people.

4) A separate stand that you lift the kettle off of so you don't have to hassle with a cord. I also wanted to be able to replace the kettle on the stand in any direction. Some makes require you to place the pot in a specific orientation.

5) Adequate protection so I wouldn't be burned. The stainless gets hot, but around the handle there is more than enough protection that it hasn't been an issue.

5) Elegant design. This kettle is well made, with little extra touches from a nice subtle tone when the water is boiled, to lighted buttons, to the lid mechanism. The extra temperature controls to optimize flavor for different types of tea are a bonus although I haven't tried them. There is a hold button if you want to keep water hot. Yes it's more expensive, but this thing sits on my kitchen counter and I use it a lot, so I was willing to spend the extra money.

Overall we have been very happy with this kettle and I looked at pretty much everything on the market. Can't say anything about reliability as we have had it only a month.

After melting yet another teapot on my stove top I decided to get an electric kettle. This one has a real quality feel to it. It heats the water much faster than a stove top kettle and it's insulated so the water will stay at temperature for a long time even if you don't use the Hold Temperature feature. It automatically shuts itself off after the water reaches temperature so there is no danger of it burning itself out which was my primary reason for buying it. Frankly it's cheaper brother, which cost half as much, probably does just as good a job. I opted for this one because the automatic lid opener operated so smoothly on this one, it was a little rougher on the cheap one, and I like gadgets and this one lots of buttons. So if you are a gadget freak who isn't particularly price sensitive get this one, if you are more interested in value for your money then get it's cheaper brother.

Perfect and then some, super quick, heats a full pot in 7 minutes, heats 2 cups in about 4. A little pricey but so far it's well worth it.

This kettle is wonderful for all types of hot water uses from soups to teas. It is especially nice for teas since it comes with a chart and buttons to press in order to make that perfect cup or pot of tea from green to black teas and in between. I loved it so much that I even purchased a second one for my grandson, who also loves it. No more boiling water or forgetting to remove it from the stove. It is safe, easy to take in a suitcase and worth every cent.

Reviewer: Comdet,
At first glance, this looks like an overpriced item, since you can get a good electric kettle for a lot less. But, this has a feature that the others lack - the ability to bring the water up to a specific temperature.

If that feature has you puzzled as of its value, then you're best off looking at a lower priced kettle. But, if you're a tea drinker, you know that certain teas must be brewed at certain temperatures for best results. For example, a green tea needs water at 175 degrees to really bring out the flavor. Hotter water will not brew a good cup of green tea. With the Breville, all you need to do is push a button, and a couple of minutes later you have 175 degree water. Need 212 degree for a black tea? Just as easy to do.

The unit is very well built. High quality materials that give the appearance of it being able to last a good long time. I was unfamiliar with Breville until I started looked at this kettle, and found that they make a whole line of kitchen appliances. Not cheap, but all appear to be excellent quality and well designed.

Easy to care for - just clean it out every so often with vinegar to remove scale. Snap to use - has easy to see buttons, each labeled with a different temperature. Just push the one you want, and you're done. Takes about 5 min to bring a full pot to a full boil. To get one cup to 175 takes about 90 seconds. Auto shut-off, and has a keep warm feature that will hold the temp for 20 min.

I was about to purchase a Zojirushi water boiler/warmer, but fortunately came across this product instead. The Zo is clearly a good unit as well - I have their bread maker and one of their rice cookers, and both are very high quality machines. The Zo water heater (and similar ones from Panasonic) are good if you want to keep a large amount of water at a certain temp all day. I, on the other hand, wanted to have 175 degree water for one cup, then perhaps 195 degree for a different tea, etc. The Zo is not designed to do that easily. The Breville lets you have a different temperature within a couple of minutes of pushing the corresponding button.

If you love tea, or want to give a great gift to someone who is a tea lover, this is a must purchase.

I used the Amazon reviews to find this kettle, and opted to buy after a considerable amount of reading. I am elated by the way this product works. It is very nicely built and is quick and easy to use. It totally lives up to everything I read about it. For heating water to a variety of desired temperatures, I can't concieve of a better or easier way to do it. We have used it for about 1 month now with complete satisfaction.

I normally to not print a review of a product. I received the Breville
kettle as a gift and I could not be happier. I use it 2 and 3 times a day and I must say that my tea drinking (different types, green, oolong, white and black) have just been wonderful.
I read the concern that someone had on the drying out of the lid, but I just use a paper towel and leave the lid open for a while. It has not
been an issue. BUT, I can tell you that until you try this kettle with the different temperatures you do not know how good tea can really taste.

I have wanted a good electric pot after breaking a previous glass one. This one is excellent since I like to brew many types of tea - the water temps can be a few degrees off but if you allow it to sit a couple of minutes on the Hold function it seems to be more accurate. My main complaint is that as soon as you remove the pot from the base the Hold function is cancelled - would like to be able to use a cup or two at a time and not have to reheat the whole thing. I researched many choices and this one gets my vote even though it is a bit pricey.

This was not a cheap item nor an easy decision. I am a tea aficionado and like to sample different kind of teas that require brewing at specific and different temperatures. Several other electric kettles are available for a better price and can be found on Amazon. However, it seemed the most other options lacked specific settings or features. In this case, I wanted something that was simple, accurate, presentable (I'd like to keep it on the kitchen counter) and that would last for a long time. Ultimately, you get what you pay for and didn't want to make this decision by price only.

This kettle is beautiful, fast, accurate and very flexible. Operation is extremely simple: It has a button for each type of tea, which will heat the water to that specific temperature, and a start button. That's it. Select your tea type and press start... a subtle beep will alert you when the water has reached its temperature.

There is also a maintain button, which will maintain the temperature for 20 minutes after it has reached its temperature. Other than that, there are no complicated menus to navigate and options to explore. Simple, effective and still elegant.

Overall, I am very pleased and would buy one again, as expensive as it is.

This Breville Kettle is the best thing since sliced bread! I have been a Tea drinker for 10 years now, and I buy the teas that are pricy. Green Teas, Red Teas, Black Teas, and White. And trying to get your water at the right Temperature is a nightmare. And so you bring the water to a boil on the stove, and even with a great stove that has a high BTU burner it still takes a least 5 min. With this Kettle you can choose you temp for what ever tea you drinking. And this kettle comes to a boil in 1 1/2 minutes, I was blow away! And your Green, and Red teas settings are even faster. I would call this an Green Kettle, because you use so much less energy to have a cup of tea. And I have a least three a day, so that adds up in Gas use to make each cup.
If anything happens to this kettle, I would be back on Amazon and buy this Kettle in a heart beat!!!!
If your a Tea, or even a coffee snob... this is the kettle to buy.

I actually took this kettle to work and keep it in my cube since I don't use the coffee maker. My doubtful co-workers tested the temperatures and they were extremely accurate. Never had a problem with any of the settings. I have used this since July and forgot to empty the water once for a two week vacation. There wasn't any mold or anything when I came back (I dumped the water, added more, and ran a few boil settings just in case). Other than the weight of the water, it's not very heavy. The plug is awesome because it has the prongs and then the big 'thingy' that you're supposed to grab instead of the wire has a large hole in it. Makes it very easy to stick a finger in it and pull instead of the wire. The measurements are easy to read and this is ridiculously simple to use. I'm looking forward to many more years of hot water. :)

I was a little leary of getting a remanufactured item, however it was in perfect condition and looked and functioned like brand new. I love this kettle. It looks nice on the counter and is easy to use. I'd rather my kids use the electric kettle when making cup of soup or other food items that require boiling water when i'm not around instead of using the stove. I will be purchasing more remanufactured products from now on. Why pay full price?!

I was a bit hesitant at buying 'remanufactured' but my innate cheapness won out. There is a lovely, high-end kettle that looks sleek in any kitchen. It functions extremely well and my sister-in-law is now a convert to kettles in general. I bought it for tea, but it's great for heating up water for cooking to cut stove-top time (which is good in summer). This has sold me on remanufactured items in general.

This an especially good looking electric kettle. It comes off the heating element and can go to the table.

In addition, it is very well crafted. The electric heating element is not in the water. It is sealed within the base of the pot. Therefore no lead that may be used in soldering the element can be leached into the water.

Sincerely,
Charlotte

I am sorry to read the one review of the kettle that must have been defective.

I have had mine for several years now and it has always worked very well, shutting off when it is supposed to, that is when the water reaches the boiling point.

I love my Cuisinart electric kettle. It is very powerful and heats up the water very fast. The auto-shut off feature is fantastic for me. I cannot tell you how many conventional kettles I wrecked by forgetting they were heating up, or even not hearing their whistles.

I love that it is stainless steel, a material that I trust to heat up without toxic effects, as opposed to all those plastic kettles out there.

Finally, it is quite easy to clean.

The only minus maybe, would be that it gets quite hot to the touch when heating up, so you have to be careful not to touch the metal part at that time to not get burned.

Overall an excellent product that I highly recommend.

Starts leaking very little water after a year of use. Shortly after it refused to power on.. We took the whole thing apart and found the issue. Basically everything in the pot was okay, but the conductive base plate overheated; the tiny contact deformed and can't reach the center pin and therefore won't power on.

Other than that, a great little device!

I have not used the remanufactured version, but i would suggest to keep away at all cost. I m very disappointed plus cuisinart customer service is very rude. I was very disappointed.

    Product Description

This attractive brushed stainless-steel electric kettle boils up to 1-3/4 quarts of water for tea, coffee, or instant oatmeal and soups. The 1,500-watt power base heats water quickly and, for safety, automatically shuts off when it reaches a boil. The cordless kettle conveniently lifts off the base to travel to the breakfast table, desk, or wherever tea is being served and has a cool bottom so it can rest on any surface. Unlike many other electric kettles, the heating element on this one is concealed within the jug. This design prevents calcium build-up, which can alter the flavor of hot water. The kettle also has a button that opens the lid with a single touch for easy refilling and an easy-to-read water level indicator. Other perks on this jug include a large, stay-cool handle and a wide lip for pouring. Cuisinart covers this cordless electric jug kettle under a 3-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde
